One year later - The disaster after the disaster
Since the outbreak of cholera in Haiti in October 2010, around 150,000 people have been infected with the pathogen. According to the latest reports, about 3,500 sufferers have now died. The silent resignation to the fact that nearly 30 children die every day is an indication of country’s widespread poverty, and a declaration of bankruptcy of the Western world. That even greater disaster has been avoided is only due to the vigorous efforts of the aid agencies. The Haitians are not completely wrong to say that today they are “a republic of NGOs” (non-governmental organizations).
In view of this urgent condition, Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help (LOG / WOH) has decided to continue sending medical aid to the country’s needy.
The children's charity organization has so far shipped about 600 tons of relief supply to Haiti, and with the support of its partner, the International Medical Corps, the delivery has been properly distributed. LOG / WOH has worked together with the International Medical Corps, an organization with about 500 helpers in Haiti, since the beginning of the disaster.
On December 9, 2010 a 40-foot container set off from the Hamburg harbor and is now scheduled to arrive in Port-au-Prince on January 6th. The vital and valuable cargo includes:
- 38 euro-pallets of disinfection material
- 10 euro-pallets of "Ringer's lactate (life-saving infusion against cholera)
- 10 euro-pallets of disinfectant spray and wipes
In addition to the sea cargo, on Christmas Eve, December 24th 2010, the airline Condor flew nine euro-pallets of "Ringer lactate" to Haiti. Packed with water purification powder for around 5 million liters of potable water, two LOG employees will be in Haiti on January 12th, the anniversary of the disaster, and together with the International Medical Corps, they will distribute all of these urgently needed goods.
Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help could make this transport possible with help of the following companies: Condor Flugdienst GmbH, Werner & Mertz Mainz, B. Braun Melsungen AG, delta pronatura – Dr. Krauss & Dr. Beckmann KG, MultiMan Puchheim.
